Description
Qualifications:
  • Have or be able to acquire a Native Language Teacher Permit via the WY Professional Teaching Standards Board
  • Written Approval from the appropriate Tribal Council Committee
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong verbal communication skills
Reports To: Assigned Principal in collaboration with Indian Ed Program Coordinator

Supervises: None
Job Status: Partial contract to equate to number of courses taught
Job Goal: The role of a Native Language and Culture teacher is to teach courses in a specific language , as well as provide expertise in the development and implementation of Indian Education for All. Native language teachers are masters of their language, demonstrating a high proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the language that they are teaching. With these skills, instructors create an environment supporting culturally appropriate instruction for students to learn effectively.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • May need to teach several levels concurrently, from beginning speakers of the language to students who are approaching fluency. Instruction in Native languages includes vocabulary, grammar, and accent as well as spelling and other mechanics of language.
  • Teach students how to interpret, and communicate in, the Native American language.
  • Teach students how to read, write, and understand the Native American language.
  • Utilize various curriculum resources and create resources when needed/appropriate . Meet course and school-wide student performance goals.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities. As appropriate, coordinate activities with the other teachers to support the school-wide curriculum.
  • Create lesson plans and modify accordingly throughout the year. Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Grade papers and perform other administrative duties as needed.
  • Provide instruction in literature and cross-cultural studies.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Create positive educational climate for students to learn in.
  • Observe and evaluate student's performance.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by invoking approved disciplinary procedures.
  • Support culturally appropriate instruction across the district
  • Work with district curriculum teams to implement Indian Education for All standards
Other Functions

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose improving student learning and meeting requirements of Indian Education grant programs.
Terms of Employment : Designated by Contract

Clearance : State and Federal background checks
Evaluation: The building principal or designee will evaluate the performance of this position.
